What is Chronic Absenteeism?

A student who misses 10% or more of their school days, which averages to just two days a month, for any reason, is considered chronically absent. Every absence, excused or unexcused, (including suspensions), is a learning opportunity lost. Chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind academically and less likely to graduate from high school. Addressing chronic absenteeism and developing good attendance habits is a solvable problem for which we all share responsibility.

Attendance Matters - ALL Day EVERY Day!

REMINDERS:

Students must be present 63% of the day to be counted as present.

Students must submit valid excuses within two days of absences for the absence to be excused.

Students who accumulate 5, 10, and 12 unexcused absences will be reported to the Compulsory Attendance Officer.

Information and procedures regarding GCSD Attendance, Absences, and Excuses can be found in our Student Handbooks.

The Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement is responsible for ensuring that all Mississippi students are afforded the opportunity to attend school and to enforce the Mississippi Compulsory School Attendance Law §37-13-91 of the Mississippi Code 1972 Annotated. The law governs compulsory school attendance. It requires a parent, legal guardian, or custodian who has legal control or charge of a child age six (6) to seventeen (17) to enroll him or her in an education program (i.e. public, private, or home school). Student enrollment must occur except under the limited circumstances specified in subsection three (3) of §37-13-91 which includes, but is not limited to, sending the child to a state-approved, nonpublic, or educating the child at home in an organized educational program. July 1, 2003, the law was amended to include the following: a child, five (5) years of age, who enrolls in public kindergarten, will have to abide by the same guidelines as outlined in §37-13-91.

As per MDE Compulsory Attendance, students who accumulate 5, 10, and 12 unexcused absences will be reported to the truancy officer on the day the absences are accrued.

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT—FERPA

Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release

any information from a student’s education record. However, FERPA slows schools to disclose those

records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following condition (34 CFR 99.31):

-School officials with legitimate educational interest;

-Other schools to which a student is transferring;

-Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;

-Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;

-Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;

-Accrediting organizations;

-To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;

-Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and

-State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State Law.

Schools may disclose, without consent, “directory” information such as a student’s name, address,

telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However,

schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible

students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory information about

them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA. The actual means of notification (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, students handbook, or newspaper

article) is left to the discretion of each school.
